Level 2 Legal Cuts Dataset Volume by 45 Percent for AmLaw 50 Firm's Urgent eDiscovery Project
An AmLaw 50 firm selected Level 2 Legal Solutions to complete a high stakes eDiscovery project related to contract disputes and whistleblower allegations for one of the world’s leading outdoor product manufacturers. Motion practice, contentious discovery disputes, and an aggressive scheduling order left little time for review. By the time search terms were approved and collections could begin, there were only three weeks to kick off review and complete all productions. Factoring in collection and processing time up front and the production set preparation time required at the end, our review team only had a two-week window to complete all coding, quality control, and hand-offs.
When outside counsel approached Level 2 Legal about this project, the only known scope-of-work variable was the production deadline. All review efforts had to be completed in two weeks, including the privilege analysis. No one knew how many documents would ultimately qualify for review.
Two weeks could mean a steady pace or a race to the finish, depending on the dataset volume. Documents were collected and added to the database on a rolling basis, ultimately resulting in a review population of more than 200,000 items.
Our Advanced Workflow Management Team, led by Project Managers Kevin Campbell and Danielle Rodriguez, customized a winning strategy to meet the aggressive deliverable dates.
Kevin and Danielle leveraged the following Level 2 Legal distinctives:
• A cohesive, well-coordinated team
• Relentless commitment to save time and money
• Shared core value of mutual respect
• A 24/7 relationship with the client
• Team continuity
Beyond commitment from the Level 2 Legal review attorneys, success required creative workflow planning and constant, real-time collaboration among L2L project managers and the client. As the client added large populations for review, Kevin and Danielle sought every opportunity to reduce volume.
With the determination to save clients time and money wherever possible, and the expertise to know where to look for efficiencies, our team delivered value by:
• Excluding 76,913 items that qualified for categorical handling from the review workflow
• Removing 8,044 items with presumptively privileged content from review for immediate privilege logging
• Culling 8,028 non-responsive junk files from the review population
Level 2 Legal was tasked to address more than 200,000 items. Our Dataset Reduction Team uncovered First-Level Review workflow reductions of more than 45 percent. Our team of experienced review attorneys handled the rest. The remaining 107,000 items were analyzed and reviewed for responsiveness, privilege, and subject-matter categorization.
The compressed timeline required commitment, defensible creativity, and 24/7 collaboration between the client and Level 2 Legal. We met all deadlines and exceeded client expectations.
When review set volumes are unknown at the outset of an urgent matter, selecting a review provider with the dedication to get it done means the difference between hoping the deadline will be met and knowing it will be. Meeting obligations and accomplishing goals in high-stakes matters requires expertise, a cohesive team, a commitment to look for every efficiency possible, and dedication to do whatever it takes, regardless of the sacrifice required or time of day.
